One of the Midlands leading independent law firms, Blakemores Solicitors, paid tribute to The Mercian Regiment yesterday, by renaming their building “Mercian House”. Blakemores Solicitors who occupy 40 Great Charles Street, Birmingham hosted an evening of celebration to officially mark the event.
The evening also served to mark the launch of “Mercian Business Connection” which has been created to bring together Officers of the Mercian Regiment and local businessmen in the Midlands to promote fundraising for the Mercian Benevolent Fund, recruitment for the 4th Battalion of the Mercian Regiment (Territorial Unit) and to assist in the career development of members of the Regiment who are leaving the armed forces.
The evening was attended by many prestigious members of the Birmingham business community as well as senior members of the Armed Forces.
Guests were treated to a military themed event which included the corps of drums from the Regiment, military war-gaming provided by the Loughborough War Gaming Association as well as static displays illustrating current military equipment. The focal point of the event was the attendance of Corporal Derby, the Regimental Ram Mascot, who normally resides at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire.
To mark the naming of the building, the internal main glass doors of Mercian House have also been embellished with the Mercian Regiment emblem, a double headed eagle crest, as well as the Regimental colours of Lincoln Green, Buff and Cerise.
Blakemores Managing Partner, who received a commemorative painting from the Regiment to honour his support, entitled “The Storming of Objective FAN”, paid tribute to the Mercian Regiment’s ongoing efforts in Afghanistan, as well as to recent soldiers who have lost their lives on operations.
Guy, who has served over 21 years as Company Sergeant Major in 29 Company of the 3rd Battalion of the Military Intelligence, expressed his ongoing support for the armed forces by stating,
“I am extremely proud having worked at 40 Great Charles Street for over 25 years and to have the honour of being able to rename the building and to show my respect for the Mercian Regiment in naming the building in their honour.
“My ongoing tribute will be to facilitate charitable work for their Benevolent Association as well as ensuing that ex-members of the Regiment have careers that they deserve in civilian occupation”.
Lt Col Dominic Wilford joined Guy in celebrating the tribute by stating,
“I am proud of the continued relations and support received from Guy Barnett on behalf of Blakemores Solicitors. Tonight has paid a wonderful tribute to the hard work of the 4th Battalion and I am proud to unveil the naming of Mercian House.
“It’s been a double celebration this evening, marking the launch of Mercian Business Connection; bringing the Regiment and businesses in Birmingham closer together.”
